I love it for typing searches etc rather than the standard remote. Its fairly straight forward I use it as a back up for when the AppleTV remote gets lost in the couch or the kids run off with it to the other side of the house. Look in its setting for the special keyboard shortcuts to use. Use an app called 1Keyboard (not affiliated with 1Password ) It allows you to control the AppleTV from your Mac or other device and you can paste in passwords from the Mac. Here's a is one other option very similar to what mentioned.
1KEYBOARD WITH APPLE TV PASSWORD
:) If you have a complex password and don't want to go through all those annoying clicks on the aluminum Apple Remote, just download the Remote app, set it up, and you're set! Hope this helps. That's actually a rather easy solution to things. So, all you have to do is copy the password from the 1Password app on iOS and paste it into this field (the field does indeed allow pasting). It does indeed work! So, if you set up your Apple TV with Home Sharing and connect your iOS device's Remote app as well, you will be able to use your iOS keyboard to type your password into a text field on the device. I had to run to a friend's house and use their Apple TV. I don't know for sure though as I have not been able to test it - I'm waiting for the new Apple TV to release before I purchase one. Since the Remote app allows you to use an iOS keyboard to enter text this is theoretically a possibility. The only way I can think of to use 1Password with your Apple TV would be to paste your password in the Apple Remote app on iOS from your 1Password app. Even with the new Apple TV, there isn't a clipboard to store a password should an app exist. There is no platform for the developers to create it on. At the moment there isn't a 1Password app for Apple TV.
